Ghalenoei sets 3 key conditions to stay as Iran manager
Iran’s national team will take the field at the 2026 AFC Asian Cup under Amir Ghalenoei, but the head coach has laid down three non-negotiable conditions for continuing his tenure. He now wants a foreign technical coach alongside him at the Asian Cup-not only to bolster the bench but to take pressure off Saeid Alhoei, whose position has come under sharp scrutiny.
Third condition: five warm-up matches before the Asian Cup
The most critical demand is five quality friendlies before the 2026 AFC Asian Cup. Ghalenoei insists that if pre-World Cup friendlies like the Spain game had been arranged, Iran would have beaten New Zealand and topped their group. Geopolitical realities, however, made that impossible.

Under Ghalenoei, Iran reached the semi-finals of the previous continental tournament before falling to Qatar in the last four. With an older squad and sky-high expectations, fans now demand either the title or at least a place in the final.
