Andranik Teymourian has stepped down from his position as an assistant coach of the Iran national football team. The departure comes as Team Melli has begun its first training camp in preparation for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup.
Teymourian, a former Iran international midfielder, joined the national team's coaching staff in April 2023. During his tenure, he worked alongside the staff in preparing the squad for major tournaments and qualifiers. An official reason for his exit has not been given. Iran currently sits third in their World Cup qualifying group with 3 points from three matches.
Preparatory Camp and Friendlies
The national team is scheduled to play two international friendlies during this camp, first against Uzbekistan on September 24th and then versus Russia. The last meeting between Iran and Uzbekistan ended in a 2-2 draw in March 2025. These matches are expected to provide key preparation as head coach Amir Ghalenoei continues to assess his squad and staff under the new circumstances.
The staffing change at this important juncture raises questions about the final composition of Ghalenoei's backroom team. The national team has yet to announce whether another coach will be appointed to fill the vacancy. Iran, unbeaten in their last five matches with two wins and three draws, now prepares to face Uzbekistan away on September 24th. The team will then host Russia at the Azadi Stadium on October 13th.
