The new 'Takhteh' gas field in Fars Province has been discovered with an estimated value of $45 billion. Announced in 2024 by Seyyed Mohieddin Jafari, the Exploration Director of NIOC, it holds about 7,500 Bcf of recoverable gas.
The Takhteh gas field is located 10 km northwest of Khonj and 35 km from the Shanul and Homa fields. The total gas in place is 7,500 Bcf, and with a 72% recovery factor, approximately 5,700 Bcf of gas is recoverable. The gas is sweet, requiring no sweetening process, which reduces development and operating costs.
The recoverable volume is equivalent to 15 years of production from a standard phase of South Pars. The field measures 50 km long, 4 km wide, and has a reservoir thickness of 450 meters. Exploratory drilling took about 17 months, followed by final tests and careful data analysis.
In addition to gas, the field contains 27 million barrels of gas condensate, of which 20 million barrels are recoverable. The combined economic value of gas and condensate is around $40 billion, significantly adding to Iran’s national wealth.
Seyyed Mohieddin Jafari emphasized that all exploration stages-from geological studies and geophysical activities to drilling-were carried out by Iranian personnel, with no need for foreign companies or personnel. He stated: "This achievement demonstrates that Iran’s technical and engineering capacity in complex exploration projects has reached a level where it can be completed without reliance on foreign parties."
Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad, speaking on national television, noted that the field also contains substantial quantities of gas condensate and estimated the value of gas and condensate resources at tens of billions of dollars. He added that the government intends to develop the field rapidly to supply its gas output to industrial users and energy-intensive sectors.
This discovery is particularly significant amid rising domestic demand for gas and efforts to expand national production, especially in the context of economic sanctions imposed since 2018.
