59 earthquakes were recorded in Iran from Aug 15 to Aug 21. These included 54 earthquakes below 3, 3 earthquakes between 3 and 4, and 2 earthquakes between 4 and 5. One of these quakes, with a Richter magnitude of 4.2, occurred on Aug 19 in Kermanshah Province.
Distribution of Earthquakes
Khorasan Razavi recorded the highest number of quakes with 13, while Kermanshah and Kerman each recorded 7, and Semnan recorded 6. During the same period, no earthquakes were reported in Tehran, East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Alborz, South Khorasan, Zanjan, Fars, Qom, Qazvin, Kurdistan, Gilan, Kohgiluyeh-Boyerahmad, Markazi, and Hormozgan provinces.
Annual Statistics
In the past year (March 2025-March 2026), a total of 2,380 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 2.5 were recorded; of these, 910 were greater than 3, 130 were greater than 4, and 15 were greater than 5. Iran accounts for about 2 % of global earthquakes and more than 6 % of the world’s earthquake victims during the 20th century.
